Dusty Kid: Don’t Call Me Italian (interview)
“Italy is collapsing right now, and unfortunately that’s exactly what Italian people deserve: having Berlusconi as a leader for a nation gives you an idea of how stupid we are. I want Sardinian independence.”
Chuckling, as he admits he’s more than a little alienated from the country he grew up in, Sardinian techno star Dusty Kid (aka Paolo Lodde) doesn’t mince his words.
“The worst thing about Italians is that for most of the population Berlusconi is a perfect example of what it means to be a man,” he continues.
“He represents exactly what they’d like to be in their own lives: rich, proud, clever, and Don Giovanni; plus a hustler and corrupt; and these are exactly the terms that people all over the world use to describe Italians.”
Though not to describe all Italians, including Paolo himself, who over the last ten years has established himself as one of Italy’s most critically rated- and popular, techno producers.
Releasing his first record aged 19 on English label Lowered Recordings, he followed up with acclaimed remixes for the likes of Mutiny and Robbie Rivera, before teaming up with fellow Sardinian producer Andrea Ferlin in 2004 to form Duoteque.
Signing to Boxer Recordings, the pair picked up immediate high profile support from the likes of Richie Hawtin, Ricardo Villalobos and Sven Vath, before Paolo unveiled his solo Dusty Kid persona. The result was massive worldwide club hits including techno monster The Riot, Tsunamy, the Twister and The Cat (which in turn transformed remixers Crookers into megastars) cementing Paolo’s status: Except back home.
“What’s been the biggest obstacle I’ve had to overcome in my career? Accepting the fact that nobody likes me in Italy,” Paolo laughs.
“I’ve played seven times in my home country, not counting Sardinia and on only two of those occasions has the club been full.”
Cultural issues aside, he’s chatting to Skrufff today to promote his new album Beyond That Hill, his follow up to his 2010 album A Raver’s Diary. Like Diary, it’s a journey style album of melodic, emotional tech-flavoured tunes and is out now on Boxer. (http://www.boxer-recordings.com/ )
Deadmau5 Denies Dancing With Prince Harry
Notoriously inaccurate British tabloid the Sun claimed Prince Harry made friends with Deadmau5 in Vegas this week, after partying for three hours while the Canadian producer performed at Wynn Hotel’s XS night-club.
“Harry had a top night and wanted to thank the DJ. He went into his dressing room to have a chat, plus share a few drinks,” a ‘source’ told the Sun.
“Harry is well into his music and was asking Deadmau5 questions about other DJs and his opinions on them,” the ‘source’ added, “They bounced off each other really well.” (The Sun; http://bit.ly/sxOtDR )

Tim Deluxe; Transformation (incredible new track)
Super talented London producer Tim Deluxe returns with a piano packed fantastic new track.…. We’re running an absolutely fascinating interview with Tim early next week…..
Here’s Tim recommending being careful what you wish for:
“New producer/s makes hot tunes > blows up = gigs everywhere > remixes instead of original productions > tours too heavily > physically and mentally tired = no new records. Also add copious amounts of free alcohol and drugs and you’ve pretty much got the picture. Followed by burn out, divorce, addiction, take your pick! This cycle is so common . . .”
