Barefoot Doctor Bit; How Can You Learn to Let Go of Vanity?
Barefoot Doctor : “Everyone has a narcissistic side – it’s not only intrinsic but essential to the human condition – the look-at-me, look-at-me aspect of the psyche, that part of us that wants to impress. We need it to make a face for ourselves so we can make a contribution to the world.
But as time goes by, you get to realize that what gives your life value and meaning is not how good others think you look, neither in the way you appear nor the way you behave, but from the quality of the love you’re injecting into the collective mix in any given moment. And of course from the quality of the love you’re receiving in return.
Because ultimately, that’s what everybody wants, what everybody needs: love. That’s why everyone wants to look good, and to look like they know what they’re doing. That’s why people want to impress others. They want love.
But love comes from loving not impressing. Impressing someone may earn you their admiration but not in itself their love. So as you get older and you lose the obvious cosmetic benefits of the first bloom of youth, rather than mask it, laser it, or chop it about, you hopefully realize you look far better by settling more into your skin and exuding the love in your heart and the wisdom in your soul.
Of course it’s helpful from a cosmetic perspective as well as a health perspective to partake of daily exercise to keep yourself supple and toned, and it’s important to attend to hygiene and grooming and make the best of yourself, but rather than waste your precious energy getting obsessed about it, use that energy to transact with others with love, from a place of ‘how can I serve here?’
And the more you do, the more beautiful you get, the older you get. There’s a woman in Houston, a socialite who hosts speakers at well-attended soirees – I gave a talk on consciousness expansion at her house the other evening – she’s 82, does nothing to mask her age, doesn’t even color her hair, and yet is stunningly beautiful to the point everyone around of all ages, has a crush on her – she’s not vain, she’s not bothered about such nonsense, but she’s beautiful because she shines from within (and she has a very pretty face).”
