Sources close to Peter Hook have downplayed a report in the Sun newspaper this week that celebrity chef Jamie Oliver found gold, a gun and New Order and Joy Division mastertapes in the basement of his new Manchester restaurant.

“It’s not often that I speak up for the Daily Mail but on this occasion they got this story correct whereas the interpretation in The Sun was way off,” the source, who wished to remain anonymous, told Skrufff.

“Ahem coughs,” he continued, “as the Mail says, the haul was not found by Jamie Oliver, but was found in 2008.”

The Daily Mail itself quoted a spokesman for Jamie Oliver who said: ‘The haul was actually removed before we moved in.’

“When HSBC moved to a new site in 2008 they had to transfer the contents of the boxes – it was then that the so-called haul was discovered.” (Daily Mail: http://bit.ly/zRFnnh )

Peter Hook was similarly bemused by the re-emergence of the story, he told Skrufff.

“What do I make of this discovery? Not very much, this happened a long time ago,” he pointed out.

The building where Jamie’s new restaurant is was the old Midland Bank, it turned out that when Factory went bankrupt Rob Gretton spirited away a load of tapes from everyone, then promptly forgot. As did the bank,” he laughed.

“It only when the building came up for sale and they opened the safety deposit boxes that hadn’t been opened for years that they discover said items. I recovered our mastertapes 15 years after Rob had stashed them there.”

However, the Ex Joy Division/ New Order bass player, who has since fallen out dramatically with former band-mates Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris, said he no longer has them.

“Strangely enough after I recovered them we put them in our lock up, the one we share as Joy Division/ New Order, but now I’ve fallen out with them I’ve lost them again,” he said.

“How apt,” Hooky added, “Do you know anyone with a balaclava and a jemmy? (crowbar),” he laughed.
