Slayer Guitarist Dies from Spiderbite
Jeff Hanneman from seminal death metal band Slayer has died three years after he was bitten by a spider and contracted a flesh eating disease.
The 49 year old guitarist died from liver failure, which the Independent linked to necrotizing fasciitis, the devastating illness he picked up after being bitten by a spider as he relaxed in a hottub.
Chatting to Classic Rock Magazine last year he described becoming ill within an hour then seeing his ‘flesh corrupting’ on the way to hospital. Undergoing emergency surgery he ended up spending months in hospital having skin grafts and extensive treatment.
“It’s the kind of thing I might have written a song about,” he told Classic Rock, “Everything that could go wrong this year did, but you know, it turned out okay. Satan had my back.” (Metal Sucks)
Publishing an open letter on the band’s official website soon afterwards, Slayer went into even more detail about the incident.
“As you know, Jeff was bitten by a spider more than a year ago, but what you may not have known was that for a couple of days after he went to the ER, things were touch-and-go,” they said.
“There was talk that he might have to have his arm amputated, and we didn’t know if he was going to pull through at all. He was in a medically-induced coma for a few days and had several operations to remove the dead and dying tissue from his arm. “ http://bit.ly/K0dlAu
This week, they confirmed his death via Facebook.
Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed.
