Get Physical’s Explosive Ibiza Move (August 6)

Get Physical have relocated their weekly Ibiza party to Ibiza’s newest superclub Booom! just two weeks after they left Privilege’s sub-club Vista unexpectedly.

Declaring ‘every ending is a new beginning’, the Berlin underground house crew referred to ‘the tides of Ibiza and its culture constantly evolving’ in a  cryptic press release, though Get Physical figurehead Philipp Jung from M.A.N.D.Y. was a little more forthcoming.

“What happened at Privilege was that the Artistic Director who brought us to the club suddenly quit with his whole team because of some difference of opinion wth the club management that we can’t really comment on,” he told Skrufff.

“It seems Privilege want to go for more show orientated evenings and hip-hop stuff too, so there was no common ground between us and them anymore,” he said.

“But we’d like to thank all the people involved in the project. We had good times there and we still think the Vista is a beautiful special club.”

So how did the hook-up with Booom! happen?

“We met first with Danny (Whittle) who is the Program Director of the club. He knows the island very well since he was working for Pacha for 14 years and is a great guy,” he said.

“Then we talked to guys from Limelight (famous promoters in the south of France who are throwing big events) who are doing the night on Tuesdays and they were very open to a collaboration with us. So we sat down with them a couple of times, chatted and understood that we are looking in the same direction and that we could achieve something very nice together.

The downside of the move obviously is that we’ve had to cut down on the line-up quite a bit as we only have one room now. And that’s very sad actually. But there is always a next time and we are sure we can make up for it.”

Skrufff (Jonty Skrufff): What’s been your take on Ibiza 2013 generally? Are there too many parties? Is the bubble bursting?

M.A.N.D.Y. (Philipp): “Of course it is common knowledge by now that this season is a very weird and difficult one because of many reasons. There are too many parties and promoters, sure, then you also have Ibiza’s sky high prices even though there’s a serious economic crisis in most of Southern Europe. Then a lot of DJs are playing absolutely everywhere- etc. etc.

When I talk to people who own restaurants on the island they’re telling me the same: it feels very unstable and nobody really knows the solution. At the moment it looks a little like everyone is trying to build up an upper class raving island which is a bit sad actually because a lot of those people haven’t got a clue about music. The actual ravers and music lovers who made this island what it is are suffering quite a lot through this policy in my view and being marginalised.”

Skrufff: How about the success of Paris Hilton; does this have any implications for the underground club scene?

M.A.N.D.Y. (Philipp): “I don’t think that event is affecting the party scene on Ibiza any more than anything else. It’s just another night with random music and a big show. A lot of people love the island for these kind of parties, so I guess it has a right to be there. But it’s certainly not a night I would ever set foot in.”

Skrufff: Anything else to add?

M.A.N.D.Y. (Philipp): “I’ll finish my saying we’re really happy the move as we believe that booom! has big potential. By coincidence we also had a residency at the venue back in the day when it was called Penelope. So it’s funny to come there with our own night after all these years.”

Get Physical is at Booom every Tuesday from August 6. DJs performing on the opening party are M.A.N.D.Y., Catz ´N Dogz, Kate Simko, Behrouz, Nicolas Masseyeff and DJ V.
