Breaking Bad Candy Cops Chastised
New York courts awarded three young Brooklyn men $33,000 in damages this week after undercover cops arrested, handcuffed and detained them for drug dealing, just moments after they left a candy store on Surf Avenue Coney island in possession of Jolly Ranchers sweets.
Arresting initially just Love Olatunjiojo and Omar Ferriera, cops allegedly then punched their friend Jimmy Santos after he complained, before detaining all three and locking them up for 24 hours in New York’s infamously brutal prison system.
Accepting the settlement, their lawyer Kenneth Smith admitted being distinctly unimpressed with the street cops’ explanation.
“To my knowledge there is no evidence in the scientific literature that crystal meth looks like Jolly Ranchers or rock candy, other than from the ‘Breaking Bad’ TV show,” Smith told the New York Daily News.
“Walter White may dictate what drugs look like in TV land, but not the narcotics policy of the NYPD,” he added.
Producers for Breaking Bad used blue rock candy as a substitute for real crystal meth, prompting scores of websites to publish recipes for wannabe cookers.
