Iran Bans ‘Gay’ Spiked’ Hair-styles
Iranian barbers’ union chief Mostafa Govahi has announced an extended ban on ‘homosexual’ and ‘devil-worshipping’ hairstyles such as spikey hair, in Iran’s latest crackdown against Western style decadent cuts.
“Haircuts that show symbols or signs of devil worshippers or those adopted by homosexuals are banned,” Mr Govahi told local press agency Isna.
“Tattoos, solarium treatments and plucking eyebrows [for men] are also forbidden,” he added. (Guardian)
Details of the latest follicle fatwa emerged four years after Iran’s government published an list or outlaw hairstyles includeing ‘ponytails, mullets and elaborate spikes’. The highly detailed list, however, approved ‘side-partings and Elvis quiffs’ as well as ‘imitating a 1980s-style floppy fringe’. (Telegraph )
“The proposed styles are inspired by Iranians’ complexion, culture and religion, and Islamic law,” hairstyle coordinator (and ‘Modesty and Veil Festival’ organiser Jaleh Khodayar said at the time.
“We are happy that the Islamic republic of Iran’s government has backed us in designing these hairstyles.”
