Class War Kicks Off in Camden
Infamous anti-inequality campaigners Class War staged a ‘summer street party’ in Camden called the ‘Fuck Parade’ last weekend, which invited revellers to ‘stand up against gentrification’ by attending a ‘reclaim the streets’ style protest.
“The heart of Camden is being ripped out, pubs are being converted to luxury flats no one can afford, venues are under threat, the market is flogged off to be a casino (and yet more unaffordable flats) Rents are rising . . . fast,” the Facebook event notification noted.
“Soon this community will be an unrecognisable, bland, yuppie infested wasteland with no room for normal (and not so normal) people. Camden is a unique place and worth defending against this onslaught of dog-eat-dog economics,” they warned.
Hundreds of revellers and scores of riot police attended the High Street event which reports suggested stayed peaceful apart from clashes provoked by the presence of Polish fascists in the area who were attending a gig by Sobota at Camden’s Underworld venue.
Meanwhile in East London, influential local blog the Dalstonist.co.uk accused Hackney Council of ‘declaring war in the borough’s nightlife’ following publication of the council’s latest plans to force all new bars and clubs to shut by midnight each weekend.
“Hackney Council does not take the night time economy seriously,” Macbeth and the Alibi chief Mark Shaffer told the Dalstonist, “They underestimate the role that the night time economy had in the redevelopment of Hackney.” (Dalstonist)
