Dubai Total Surveillance App Warning
Civil Liberties website Detained in Dubai warned this week that a new informer app could pose particular problems for tourists and expats leaving them ‘even more vulnerable to frivolous reports from disgruntled individuals.’
Dubai police chief General Khamis Mattar Al Muzaina urged locals to download ‘Police Eye’ from the Apple store ‘to give us tips about anything suspicious’.
“It’s not necessary to mention your name and details,” he added, “Just pass the information to us on your smartphone.”
“We expect that there will be an increase in the number of reports of behaviour considered offensive, such as public affection, road disputes, inappropriate clothing and alcohol consumption,” Detained in dubai concluded.
“The App essentially turns residents into law enforcers and turns citizens against each other. What is created is a society where the subjects are turned against each other and renders them vulnerable to oppression. Division is created where the residents are made busy, monitoring each other,” they added.
