Uzbekistan President Defends Gay Hate
Uzbek President Islam Karimov blamed homosexuality on western decadence last week, during a televised speech in which he defended local laws which penalise gay sex with three year sentences.
‘We talk about so-called Western culture. We call it vulgar culture. You know what I mean,” the President sneered during a meeting of senior local politicians, “homosexuality is disgusting to Uzbeks”. (Radio Free Europe/ GayStarNews)
His comments came three years after Uzbekistan media branded rock, heavy metal and hip hop as ‘alien music’ in a sustained campaign which, ‘denounced Western mass culture for encouraging “immorality” among the youth and for “damaging the country’s national values and traditions”. (BBC )
The former soviet country’s own culture, however, was exposed by ex-British ambassador to Uzbekistan, Craig Murray, who in a speech several years ago, described learning of barbaric conditions in the local prison system during his tenure there in 2004.
“I’m talking of people being raped with broken bottles,” he said at a lecture that was re-broadcast by the Real News Network.
“I’m talking of people having their children tortured in front of them until they sign a confession. I’m talking of people being boiled alive.” (RawStory )
