No Fats, No Femmes Film Fights Dating Discrimination
Self-declared Brooklyn ‘cultural worker, performance artist, and freedom fighter’ Jamal Lewis is seeking funds to produce a documentary called No Fats, No Femmes which focuses on issues of race, fatness, and desirability that have been deliberately silenced’,
No Fats, No Femmes interrogates and explores desire and the ways in which it is deeply informed by media, pop culture, and capitalism through interviews, archival research, and performance,” he explains on the film’s crowd-funding page.
“The film critically engages the phrase “no fats, no femmes,” which is popularly used on queer social networking/dating sites to describe one’s dating preferences, through the personal narrative(s) of 5 Black and Brown gender-non-conforming, queer, trans, fat, femme, and disabled people.”
Chicago house legend Derrick Carter endorsed the film this week via a supportive comment on Facebook.
“Because you need to know. Because I am not invalid. Because you don’t get to decide for me. Because I am who I am meant to be,” he posted. (Click here for more )
