Detroit techno founder Kevin Saunderson, hinted that he’s considering retiring from full time DJing when he’s 55, this week, revealing that he’s already started building a thriving hair care empire.

“Outside of music I’m kind of an entrepreneur, I like doing other things,” the 47 year old grandfather and father of four kids told the Independent.

“I have a chain of hair salons,” he revealed, “there are about 23 stores in America and that’s growing.”

Chicago School of Shoe-making- click for more

42 year old Chicago legend Derrick Carter also hinted that he’d been thinking about life after DJing via his Facebook Band page last month, proudly posting a photograph of a custom made pair of blue and brown loafers.

“I know it’s meant to be a music page but I’ve been going to shoemaking school and just finished my first pair,” the Classic Recordings legend declared.

“I’m proud of them so I’m sharing! — at Chicago School of Shoemaking,” he added.

The School itself offers two day courses including Basic Tie shoe to So You Wanna be a Cobbler.

“We are dedicated to teaching the art of hand-making shoes to promote self-sufficiency and sustainability. Our goal is to empower all people to enjoy a satisfying and liberating experience around the art of footwear construction,” the School says on their own Facebook page.

“Now people who’ve always dreamed of making their own shoes can learn this valuable skill and craft. Please spread the word!” they add. (http://on.fb.me/txLtM5 )

Whether either DJ ever actually stops performing remains to be seen, a point legendary New York manager Judy Weinstein recognized in an interview with (ironically long defunct) British Magazine One Week to Live in 2007.

Chatting about her Def Mix stable of 40 and 50 something stars including Frankie Knuckles, David Morales and Satoshi Tommie she said none were even close to stepping aside.

“We laugh because a lot of the younger DJs, they were always like: ‘When are the old ones gonna’ retire so we can get a break, back in the 70s and 80s . . . and 90s,’ she told One Week To Live.

“And the older ones, they’re not going anywhere. This is what they do. And until their last breathe, they’ll still be doing it, because the real ones- they last forever,” she laughed.

Skrufff (Jonty Skrufff): How did you end up doing what you do today?

Six Drummers: “We started by making films about Six Drummers: “Music for one apartment and six drummers”, and “Sound of Noise”. Then felt an urge to investigate this music further and take the concept from film to stage.”

Skrufff: How big a role has luck played in your life/ career?

Six Drummers: “We were extremely lucky when we found an electrical hospital bed we could play on. It played chords: am7 on the way up, and dm7 down. A groovy bed.”

Skrufff: What’s been the hardest obstacle you’ve had to overcome?

Six Drummers: “To finish “Sound of Noise”.

Skrufff: What’s been the biggest mistake you’ve made (and what did you learn from it?)

Six Drummers: “We have a tendency to work with very complicated ideas. It seems we’ve learned nothing so far.”

Skrufff: how superstitious are you? (if so, about what? )

Six Drummers: “We never whistle on stage.”

Skrufff: What advice would you offer someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?

Six Drummers: “Never forget to enjoy yourself, or at least try.”

Skrufff: What has been your greatest achievement?

Six Drummers: “Playing Ravel’s Bolero on a food processor.”

Skrufff: What’s the meaning of life?

Six Drummers: “Having kids. And making them too.”

Skrufff: What are your expectations about Sochi: what do you hope to achieve/ experience from the conference?

Six Drummers: “We’ll do a collaboration with a DJ we’ve been interested in for a long time: Johanna Olofsson. Our performance combines remixes, food processors and live drumming, and we believe it will be impossible not to dance to.”

In Sochi, Six Drummers will be Sanna Persson-Halapi, Fredrik Myhr, Anders Vestergård, Ola Simonsson, Johannes Stjärne Nilsson and DJ Johanna Olofsson.

Barefoot Doctor: “This is a poignant one for me, being in the helping industry: occasionally when I’ve gone out of my way to help someone, generally above and beyond the call of duty, because their plight has moved me, rather than thank me, they wind up resenting me.

I’ve learned to stop taking it personally and instead understand it as them going through their own process.

Their reaction derives from an inner conflict between the aspect that wants to be whole and sound and the self-destructive aspect – we all have one: Freud called it the death urge. So at the point of receiving the help their healthy aspect craves, their self-destructive aspect kicks up and rebels, causing them to project negatively onto the person helping them.

Eventually it’s all down to playing our part in helping and contributing as best we can as we go along and remaining unattached from the results, good or bad. We do our bit and let go.

Help given with a good heart always comes back in some form of reward- not necessarily from the one we help, but it will come back from someone somewhere. And if the person we’ve helped attacks us for it, we understand it’s just them acting out an internal conflict process, wish them well, desist from taking it personally and move on.

At a deeper level, the actions and reactions of those around us are a reflection of what’s going on within. So when someone attacks us unjustly, especially after we’ve just done them a favor, it indicates we’re unconsciously attacking or sabotaging ourselves at some level.

Best at that point is to mentally thank that person for showing us our own inner conflict and rather than focusing on their behavior, focus on healing the inner conflict by noticing and accepting it and ourselves more profoundly and roundly.”

Skrufff (Jonty Skrufff): When you started Exit, how much did you start off with a clear vision?

Bojan Boskovic (Exit Festival): “We had a clear vision of removing the dictatorship in 2000. This is how we started. The project had a new vision once the regime has changed. The new beginning and the dream was to become a relevant festival. This happened in 2001.”

Skrufff: How big a role has luck played in your life/ career?

Bojan Boskovic (Exit Festival): “I have no idea. I think luck is important. But it also something that follows brave people. We had more brains than luck, in my humble opinion.”

Skrufff: What’s been the hardest obstacle you’ve had to overcome?

Bojan Boskovic (Exit Festival): “The political mindset in Serbia.”

Skrufff: What’s been the biggest mistake you’ve made; and what did you learn from it?

Bojan Boskovic (Exit Festival): “Never to mix beer and vodka. Do they do so in Russia (smiling)?”

Skrufff: How superstitious are you?

Bojan Boskovic (Exit Festival): “Not at all. I am an atheist.”

Skrufff: What advice would you offer someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?

Bojan Boskovic (Exit Festival): “Don’t go there.

Skrufff: What has been your greatest achievement?

Bojan Boskovic (Exit Festival): “Ability to be over-productive over the course of 15 years, to create a lot of projects, meet crazy people, employ friends and be an inspiration; To improve things; Change things; To make a revolution; To make a movement.”

Skrufff: What’s the meaning of life?

Bojan Boskovic (Exit Festival): “42.”

Skrufff: What are your expectations about Sochi: what do you hope to achieve/ experience from the conference?

James Bullock (Elite Music Management, UK) The Key Questions

Starting his nightlife career as a club promoter in Liverpool, James Bullock joined Elite Music Management almost seven years ago and today handles bookings for the likes of Luke Solomon, Derrick Carter, Max Cooper and X Press 2.

With previous experience in business and marketing (he also manages Derrick Carter) he describes his Elite role as ‘breaking down the agent Vs promoter divide of misunderstanding’ as well as keeping his DJs busy, on top form and happy.

Skrufff (Jonty Skrufff): How did you end up doing what you do today? Did you fall into it or start off with a clear vision?

James Bullock: “In a way, it’s both. Since I realised I wasn’t going to make it as a professional footballer, I’ve always wanted to be creative or work with creative people. I felt drawn to the arts and then focussed more towards music.

I organised a couple of raves with my friend on his farm when we were kids. Then I legitimised that a little by promoting a range of events in established venues. Out of this experience I came to know Paul Wells, owner of Elite Music Management, who gave me a job as an agent, and I’ve worked on that ever since. My career makes much more sense retrospectively, it would have been very difficult to strategise these experiences.”

Skrufff: How big a role has luck played in your life/ career?

James Bullock: “I’ve worked really hard to be this lucky. It’s taken a lot more faith than luck to be here today. Some people would say I’m lucky to manage Derrick Carter – but he wouldn’t want to work with us if Luke Solomon and Gene Farris hadn’t given him their recommendations. Relationships and reputations are incredibly important.”

Skrufff: What’s been the hardest obstacle you’ve had to overcome?

James Bullock: “As an agent/manager, we work with people from all over the world, all of whom live in a vast array of cultures and with different expectations, so that always throws up a myriad range of challenges every day. Understanding and relating with people is something I always want to get better at.”

Skrufff: What’s been the biggest mistake you’ve made?

James Bullock: “I’m sure Paul could answer that for me! I haven’t double-booked a DJ in a while (laughing).”

Skrufff: How superstitious are you?

James Bullock: “Not at all – my life is way too jazz to find any patterns . . . what worked yesterday never seems to work today.”

Skrufff: What advice would you offer someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?

James Bullock: “Don’t, just enjoy making your own footsteps. Love your feet, love your walk, and choose good people to share the journey with. Having said that, I’m always looking for people to join our journey, so I do welcome fellow-travellers.”

Skrufff: What has been your greatest achievement?

James Bullock: “Getting Derrick Carter to reply to an email is pretty good start! Building a roster of exceptionally talented people who I really enjoy working with. I’m so glad I persevered through the early years when money was tight. But by the end of this year, I hope my greatest achievement will be that our dog is trained (laughing).”

Skrufff: What’s the meaning of life?

James Bullock: “Enjoy the journey, love and be loved.”

Skrufff: What are your expectations about Sochi: what do you hope to achieve/ experience from the conference?

James Bullock: “I have no idea, so I can’t wait! Bring it all on.”

Ralph Simon (Mobilium International) The Key Questions

Leading mobile entertainment strategist Ralph Simon advises stars including Madonna, U2 and Lady Gaga on their mobile strategies, reflecting his status as one of the world’s top experts in mobile technology and the music business.

At Sochi he’ll be delivering a keynote presentation demonstrating the possibilities for mobiles, apps and new media platforms with a specific focus on the Russian market and connecting internationally and the opportunities that exist.

SWMC (Jonty Skrufff): How did you end up getting so involved in mobiles and technology?

Ralph Simon: “My passion for trying to be right at the intersection point of music, technology and lifestyle usage and being in San Francisco and Silicon Valley in the early 90′s made me realise that this was the way of the future. I could see that mobile devices were changing lifestyles in Korea and Japan, and that it was only a matter of time before the rest of the world would get “mobilised”.”

SWMC: How big a role has luck played in your life/ career? (what’s been the luckiest break that’s happened to you?)

Ralph Simon: “I have never believed in luck. It might have a place in developing urban mythologies, but I have always found that one’s passion and hard work count for almost everything. Someone once said that “work” was the dirtiest four letter word in the English language – if you love what you do then it is never work, but, in my experience, hard work comes with the turf.

Here’s one lucky break – I heard that movie producer Michael Douglas was going to be in Paris and wanted so badly to get the soundtrack of the movie. I flew to Paris, and hung around the reception area of the grand hotel – saw Douglas, buttonholed him and got a meeting that led to us making a major hit song and global chart topper – “When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going”.”

SWMC: What’s been the hardest obstacle you’ve had to overcome?

Ralph Simon: “The hardest obstacle has been people’s indifference to the growing and fast emerging mobile movement world wide. Creative and content companies were reluctant at first to enter the mobile area, and it took countless meetings, urgings and public pronouncements to get people to come on board.”

SWMC: What’s been the biggest mistake you’ve made?

Ralph Simon: “When I first moved to San Francisco in 1991, I auditioned a young 12 year old girl singer and her two cousins and passed on signing them to my new record label. The girl was Beyonce Knowles.”

SWMC: How superstitious are you?

Ralph Simon: “I am not superstitious. I prefer to believe in spiritual linkages and connective tissue than superstition.”

SWMC: What advice would you offer someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?

Ralph Simon: “Get a good understanding of basic coding. Get to appreciate the art of being a DJ and also what it takes to really work the DJ Culture. Always keep an eye on what is happening in the leading trans media markets and countries world wide.”

SWMC: What has been your greatest achievement?

Ralph Simon: “Helping to develop great young songwriters, producers, artists, sound architects and musical thinkers.”

SWMC: What’s the meaning of life?

Ralph Simon: “128 BPM.”

SWMC: What are your expectations about Sochi: what do you hope to achieve/ experience from the conference?

Ralph Simon: “I am so excited about coming to Sochi. I believe that Russian dance music and Russian creatives are amongst the best in the world. They need to get their expertise and prowess seen and experienced around the world. I am sure that there must be a Kaskade or Tiesto or David Guetta like talent in Sochi and in Russia these days. How can we find them and introduce them to the global world markets?”

Skrufff chief Jonty Skrufff is also the international representative for the Sochi Winter Music Conference, which takes place next weekend in Russia (February 9-12)

Duncan Dick (click for more)

Duncan Dick (Mixmag Deputy Editor) The Key Questions

Duncan Dick joined British magazine Mixmag as a freelance writer in 2003, becoming clubs editor in 2005, features editor in 2007, then Deputy Editor in 2011.

As Mixmag’s occasional spokesman on the politics of rave he has called mephedrone ‘very moreish’ in front of 1 billion people on BBC News 24, incited civil disobedience in the Observer newspaper and once got into a shouting match with a representative of the Royal National Institute for Deaf People on the Today program on BBC Radio 2.

SWMC (Jonty Skrufff): how did you end up doing what you do today? (did you fall into music journalism or start off with a clear goal) and how did you end up working for Mixmag?

Duncan Dick (Mixmag): “While completing a law degree at University I realised that it was the writing I enjoyed rather than the law. I became clubs editor of the University newspaper, at one point writing a review of a new nightclub in Glasgow so scathing that it led to the resignation of several other newspaper staff.

After a year out temping in London I returned to University to do a postgraduate diploma in journalism. As part of my course I was required to do some work experience. Rolling Stone circa 1971 was sadly unavailable so I reckoned Mixmag was the next best thing. Work experience led to regular freelancing, which led to a staff position.”

SWMC: how big a role has luck played in your life/ career?

Duncan Dick (Mixmag): “I’ve been lucky to work under some very good editors who have each taught me a lot and also shown faith in me. Generally I have been lucky in that I’ve been healthy up ’til now – and I realise every day how lucky I am not just to be paid for doing something I love, but just to have a job at all.”

SWMC: What’s been the hardest obstacle you’ve had to overcome?

Duncan Dick (Mixmag): “For someone whose work involves a lot of networking and, of course, interviewing people, I’m actually quite shy. Also for someone who spends so much time in nightclubs I am a truly awful dancer.”

SWMC: What’s been the biggest mistake you’ve made?

Duncan Dick (Mixmag): “These all involve travel – turning up at the airport 12hrs late for a press trip to Singapore after getting confused by the time on the ticket, going to Gatwick rather than Heathrow for a trip to LA after getting confused… etc. I now get someone else to check the travel details with me! And I always get to the airport in loads of time – just in case it’s the wrong one.”

SWMC: How superstitious are you?

Duncan Dick (Mixmag): “Medium – I don’t walk under ladders, am very fond of black cats and try not to wish bad things on people in case it rebounds on me.”

SWMC: What advice would you offer someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?

Duncan Dick (Mixmag): “Go into a higher paid career. If you absolutely must get into magazine journalism, be prepared to do work experience or an internship. Make sure your grammar and spelling etc. is perfect as nothing turns editors off more than lazy, slack writing. Have a look at this webchat I did for the Guardian which goes into lots of detail on this subject. http://careers.guardian.co.uk/music-journalism-best-of

SWMC: What has been your greatest achievement?

Duncan Dick (Mixmag): “No idea, but I wrote a book on Copenhagen’s Coma club last year which gave me a real sense of achievement, especially since I completed it in about ten days.”

SWMC: What’s the meaning of life?

Duncan Dick (Mixmag): “It’s up to each of us to decide.”

SWMC: What are your expectations about Sochi: what do you hope to achieve/ experience from the conference?

Duncan Dick (Mixmag): “I’m absolutely fascinated by Russian club culture and Russian culture as a whole and I can’t wait to see the town and the landscape. I’d like to get some great stories that will enhance the magazine and work on a strategy to cover more Russian events and stories in Mixmag in the future.

I’d like to meet the people who drive the Russian scene, and I’d like to spread the word about the new Mixmag app, which allows people all over the world to download the magazine to their iPad or iPhone ( www.mixmag.net/digital ) – it means that Russian clubbers can get each new issue the day it comes out rather than wait ages for an expensive import.”

Todd Burns (Resident Advisor): “One day, I told myself that I wanted to be the second best electronic music writer in the world. (Next to Jonty Skrufff.) I’m still working on it.”

SWMC: What’s been the hardest obstacle you’ve had to overcome?

Todd Burns (Resident Advisor): “My lack of talent.”

SWMC: What’s been the biggest mistake you’ve made?

Todd Burns (Resident Advisor): “Thinking that I had a bit of talent. Don’t let your ego get in the way!”

SWMC: What’s the meaning of life?

Todd Burns (Resident Advisor): “42 according to Douglas Adams. Who am I to disagree?”

SWMC: What are your expectations about Sochi: what do you hope to achieve/ experience from the conference?

Todd Burns (Resident Advisor): “I’m not sure what to think about the conference, as I haven’t been. But what I’ve heard from Jonty leads me to believe that Russians are very serious about their electronic music. I hope to change that a little bit.”

Skrufff chief Jonty Skrufff is also the international representative for the Sochi Winter Music Conference, which takes place next weekend in Russia (February 9-12)

Tim Metz (click for more)

Tim Metz (Dancetrippin) The Key Questions

Tim Metz (30) is co-owner and Director Marketing & Operations of DanceTrippin, the only dance-music content platform to operate both a highly popular international website and a 24/7 dance music linear TV channel.

SWMC (Jonty Skrufff): How did you end up doing what you do today as marketing director of Dancetrippin? (Did you fall into it or start off with a clear vision?)

Tim Metz (Dancetrippin): “For me personally it started off with lots of parties and I fell into it from there. Dancetrippin started with the sense that there was a better way to capture the spirit of parties and good DJs in video and audio than what was being done at that moment by the MTVs of this world. But there was not a clear vision for a business model at the start, just cool videos.”

SWMC: How big a role has luck played in your life/ career? (What’s been the luckiest break that’s happened to you?)

Tim Metz (Dancetrippin): “I think the luckiest break in my life has been that I was born in Holland in the early 80′s and not in Africa or large parts of Asia (at that time). I don’t mean that in a sarcastic or demeaning way: it’s a lot harder- if not impossible- to achieve anything if you’re born under very bad circumstances and/or totally in the middle of nowhere. Besides that there is always some elements of luck here and there, but also a lot of hard work has been involved.”

Dancetrippin; click for DJ mixes

SWMC: What’s been the hardest obstacle you’ve had to overcome?

Tim Metz (Dancetrippin): “Learning to refuse the free parties and alcohol. Seriously: to convince people that what we were doing was actually going to be liked / enjoyed by people (“Who’s going to want to watch a DJ and dancing people for more than a few minutes?!” – we still get that attitude, but much less than a decade ago).

SWMC: What’s been the biggest mistake you’ve made?

Tim Metz (Dancetrippin): “Refusing most of the free parties and alcohol.”

SWMC: How superstitious are you?

Tim Metz (Dancetrippin): “I’m not superstitious at all, I’m more off a southern Dutch farm-boy, pretty grounded (most of the time). Although I do believe in other levels of consciousness and time that we can’t really comprehend yet, but once we figure that out it will have nothing to do with superstition or religion anymore.”

SWMC: What advice would you offer someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?

Tim Metz (Dancetrippin): “Firstly figure out what it is you really want to do in life (watch that Steve Jobs Stanford commencement speech for details: http://bit.ly/cdJDIf ), then pursue it with dedication, passion and hard work until you either succeed or fail. And if you don’t know what it is you want to do, go travel for an extended period of time, without any old friends to far-away places. You’ll either discover what it is you want to do, or you’ll get to appreciate your old life more and settle for that.”

SWMC: What has been your greatest achievement?

Tim Metz (Dancetrippin): “Personally there’s still lots to do, but from the company perspective our greatest achievement so far is that we’ve managed to launch our 24/7 dance TV channel through satellite and cable across Europe in 2011. That was a dream for a long time and it’s great to see that turn into a reality after all those years.”

SWMC: What’s the meaning of life?

Tim Metz (Dancetrippin): “There is no meaning, that’s our brain tricking us. In the end we’re still just a (special) kind of animal.”

SWMC: What are your expectations about Sochi: what do you hope to achieve/ experience from the conference?

Tim Metz (Dancetrippin): “It will be my first time in Russia so I am excited to get introduced to Russian culture and besides that I hope to meet a lot of interesting people to learn from and have some fun with.”
