Canadian tech star Deadmau5 left Madonna’s larger than life persona in tatters this week, after ridiculing her for making an apparent reference to ecstasy use in front of thousands of ravers from the Main stage of Miami’s Ultra Music festival.

“I’ve finally made it to Ultra music festival. I’ve been here in spirit for many years,” she told the crowd as she made a guest appearance alongside Avicii.

“Electronic music has been a part of my career since I started, and I can honestly say a DJ saved my life before asking ‘How many people in this crowd have seen Molly?’

Though a portion of the crowd cheered, techno-pop polemicist Deadmau5 (who wasn’t in attendance) was distinctly unimpressed and launched a fearsome tirade via Twitter soon afterwards.

“very classy there madonna. “HUR DUR HAS ANYONE SEEN MOLLY???” such a great message for the young music lovers at ultra. quite the f’n philanthropist. but hey, at least yer HIP AND TRENDY! fucking cant smack my head hard enough right now,’ he stormed.

“Seriously I giveth not a fucking single FUCK for slating Madonna for reaching an entirely NEW level of idiocy,” he continued moments later.

“That’s your big contribution to [electronic dance music]?” he asked. “Thats your big message to ultra attendies? hipsterspeak for looking for drugs? fuck off you fucking IDIOT. fuck.”

As deadmau5’ comments were recycled by newspapers and blogs worldwide, Madonna responded (also via Twitter) posting an image of herself from the 80s with mouse ears and a message printed in a cartoon bubble coming out of her mouth.

‘From one mouse to another I dont support drug use and i never have. 

‘I was referring to the song called Have You Seen Molly written by my friend Cedric Gervais who I almost worked with on my album,” it read.

‘Communication is always best. You should have called me first, we could have cleared it up ‘privately.’ ” she Tweeted soon after, “See you on the road.”

Though Deadmau5 uncharacteristically backed off he couldn’t resist further pops, as the story continued to reverberate and grow.

“Sure. regardless, just be a little more aware of what you *should* represent at EDM events,” he responded to Madonna, “and ill watch my mouth.”

Both Madonna and Deadmau5 each ended up attracting criticism on message boards, such as Mixmag’s online forum at Mixmag.net (http://bit.ly/HhvTMU )

“Every time I go to EDM festivals I take looads of mdma, but you don’t see me on the stage being basically all like ”Heelloo police? yes everybody here is on illegal drugs! come shut us down please!” not a good fucking idea,” Robbie Beaudry · Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island suggested.

“Coming from another “pop sellout” those words are pretty strong,” Domenic Buccilla countered, “Stop being a Fucking idiot and wearing a gimmicky mask to win grammys.”

Dehli police seized a half litre of cobra venom and four live snakes last week, after animal rights activists alerted them that revellers were planning to experiment with the poison at parties in the city.

“We had information that some cobra snakes and their venom were to be smuggled to Delhi from Rajasthan so we laid a trap to catch the smuggled snakes,” animal activist Gaurav Gupta told India today.

“Cobras are killed in large numbers and their venom is smuggled to Delhi and NCR to be used in rave parties for doping purposes,” he added. (http://bit.ly/ymqfiF )

The discovery prompted local newspaper the Daily Pioneer to talk of a ‘neo-rich middle class flirting with death for fun’ in India, suggesting up to 5,000 revellers who would have sampled the venom.  The Pioneer was unimpressed, suggesting the sensation seekers were  ‘discarding morals in search of the great high’.

“While still esoteric, the use of snake venom as a drug has been documented,” the Pioneer pointed out, “And it reportedly causes feelings of ‘happiness and grandiosity’ for which the drug users remain firmly fixated on the present and do not bother about the future.” http://bit.ly/wMPAcr

The moral ambiguities of electronic dance music fans were further challenged in India this week, by Congress leader Pramod Madhwaraj following an outdoor party which attracted 500 to the idyllic location of St Mary’s Island in Udupi district.

Carrying out a ‘cleansing’ ritual on the island, Madhwaraj appeared less than impressed with the behaviour of the mainly Western revellers who partied to music provided by DJs and iconic psy-trance legends Juno Reactor.

Doctor James Bell from London’s Maudsley hospital said that licensing drugs such as mephedrone rather than criminalizing them will ‘save lives’, this week, after 100 deaths in the last 2 years were linked to the recently criminalized drug.

“Well-adjusted people, people in good jobs, want to use drugs,” Dr Bell, head of the party drugs clinic at the hospital, told the Standard.

“People will always want to buy them. There should be some form of licensing of drugs so we know exactly how they are being manufactured and what’s going into them. Aside from being the safer option, regulation will also demystify drugs,” he added (Standard: http://bit.ly/s7nnr4 )

His comments appeared just as reformed party animal Fatboy Slim spoke euphorically of the natural highs he now finds from DJing, after quitting alcohol in 2009.

The superstar DJ/ pop star confessed to feeling terrified the first time he performed after cleaning up, admitting ’it was two or three gigs before I could dance. My hips wouldn’t do it’ though said he now enjoys ‘a completely different buzz’.

Ironically, rehab experts such as acclaimed substance abuse author Terence T Gorski, highlight euphoric recall as a danger sign for users relapsing, at least for those previously addicted to cocaine.

“Euphoric recall is a way in which cocaine addicts ‘romance the high’ by remembering and exaggerating the pleasurable experiences of past cocaine use, while blocking out painful and unpleasant aspects of the memory,” the author of Staying Sober) explains on his website.

“Dismantle Euphoric Recall,” he instead recommends.

Lonely Planet Bali expert Ryan Ver Berkmoes warned this week that virtually every drug dealer in Bali could be working with the police, as a 14 year old boy remained in jail after being busted with pot.

“You just shouldn’t (have anything to do with) drugs in Bali, period,” the US based author told the Australian newspaper, “because you can’t trust the people who would sell them to you.”

He also issued an uncompromising warning about having anything to do with local cops generally.

“You just don’t want to be involved with them — there is just no upside,” he stressed. “Anytime I’ve seen something happen where you think, oh, we should call the police, the first thing locals and expats who know the place say is don’t call the police”, he warned. The dangers of dabbling were emphasized by the example of Australian psy-trance legend Nick Taylor, who in 2007 spent several months locked up in Kerobokan jail after being caught with a tiny amount of cocaine when police raided an after-party he was attending.
