Music Criticism’s Personal Touch
Daily Telegraph music critic Lucy Jones posted a blog about the increasing polarization of opinion in music this week, lifting a chunk out of US writer Alex Ross’ latest book Best Music Writing, to illustrate why so many people hate Coldplay.
“Music makes people angry because it’s so tribal: people choose different genres and it becomes part of their identity,” the New Yorker critic declared in his book’s introduction.
“This choice – whether it’s to follow Pérotin, The Vengaboys or Madonna – says something about you as a person, which is perhaps why people get so defensive about their favourite bands. Criticising someone’s music taste is an implied criticism of them.” (Telegraph)
